How Often Do You Need To Read The Bible?
Christians everywhere are debating how much time nosotros should spend reading the bible. Leave information technology to us Christians to have something as beautiful as reading the bible, just to turn information technology into a rules based minimum quota we must strive to attain.
There'south not a unmarried verse that calls Christians to invest a predetermined portion of time reading the bible. So how much fourth dimension should we spend studying the bible?
I think we get very incorrect when we put a 'minimum corporeality' of time on bible reading. It'south merely another class of rules-based Christianity and legalism.
I am Not anti-bible reading. In fact, I encourage it, recommend information technology, and personally read it on an ongoing ground. I concord that the bible is good for education, reproof, and correction. However, I am convinced that every bit believers we take Christ living in united states and nosotros don't crave meeting a minimum standard of bible reading to know what sin is, to know the Grapheme of God, or to live upright godly lives.
Jesus, in us, is our counselor. Our guide. Our instructor. Our Spirit /His Spirit is not 'starving' because nosotros don't read the bible long enough each week. Where practise we get this stuff from?
The early Christians didn't have bibles. Some of them only had one letter (i.e. the Corinthians but had Corinthians). Also, many of them could not read and solely relied on someone else to read to them. Yet, as believers, they had Christ living in them, and while a bible would have been swell,
'God'due south power has given them EVERYTHING they needed for life and godliness (2 Peter i:3).
We have something that people before the cross never had. We accept the Spirit of God living in us. The God of the universe has made his dwelling in us and given the states all we really need. I think this is why in John five:39 we see Jesus say to the religious elite:
'You search the Scriptures because y'all think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that prove about Me'.
I'm sure there are many poor believers across the globe that don't have bibles, and far be it from me to imply that this somehow makes them less godly or lacking in spirituality.
Reading the bible is wonderful, and highly encouraged, but
- Reading the bible for 10 hours vs 1 60 minutes doesn't brand you lot more godly
- Reading the bible for 10 hours vs 1 hour doesn't become you lot more forgiveness
- Reading the bible for 10 hours vs i hour doesn't make you closer to God.
So aye. Read your bible. I am in no way implying that we shouldn't read our bibles. It's the greatest on the planet. It's packed with wisdom. It's the word of God (which is in you). Maybe you read the bible 10 hours a week. Mayhap 30 minutes a week. Both are fully adequate to God.
Your bible can collect dust for 3 months and you could nonetheless exude the dear of Christ and say no to sin and ungodliness. My advice – don't give in to religious pressure demanding that yous need to see some minimum standard of bible reading fourth dimension then that y'all can accomplish some man-made quota to be more than godly.
Author: Mike Cynar
Mike Cynar grew up in church building and observed that countless people would go to church and and so simply stop. The church always referred to them every bit 'faux Christians' or 'backsliders' but Mike discovered the trouble was deeper. The problem was the church message. The message was 90% behavior improvement and how bad you are, with a pinch of who you are in Christ, It was similar every sermon was being preached to the church building of Corinth. It's in the Baptist church, Cosmic, Pentecost, and most every other church building. After discovering the truthful gospel message and how we are made right with God because of what 'Jesus did' (not what 'nosotros practise') Mike fix out to free believers from behavior improvement programs and bring them back to Jesus. The Event – Jesus Without Religion was launched.
